What Is Serverless?

One of the most common questions we get at Scrivito, is about our serverless approach. We have had quite a few eye rolls and plenty of head scratching. Everyone knows the internet is built on the back of millions of servers, so how can we be serverless?

What is serverless computing?

“Serverless computing allows you to build and run applications and services without thinking about servers. Serverless applications don't require you to provision, scale, and manage any servers.” – Amazon

Well, when we describe Scrivito as serverless, we’ve built a CMS which takes care of many of the common barriers you’d face when getting your website or application online (and keeping it there).

In the good old days, if you wanted to launch a website or application, you would likely have to pre-purchase a hosting resource from a provider. You’d have to think about how that resource will scale, then set up load balancing for when you have large volumes of traffic, determine where you’ll store your databases and how to scale those solutions and so much more. You were responsible for updates and security patches and many administrative functions. Then, only once you had all this setup, you’d be able to get online and start writing your application. Thankfully, providers like AWS brought us cloud technology which removed the many barriers above, so you could get live and develop.

Meet serverless technology

Serverless technology removes the need for you to think about servers when getting set up and going live, you can just focus on running code and let Scrivito handle the rest.

Our customers choose the serverless solution offered by Scrivito for these main reasons…

+ It scales with demand automatically

Our serverless technology runs your code and knows when additional resource is required. For example, if your application had a spike in traffic you wouldn’t need to worry about bandwidth or other resource limitations, it just works. Plus, with Scrivito you don’t need to pay for this additional resource.

+ It’s way more cost effective

You only pay for the content objects in use on your website or application, which means you’ll never need to set up servers, monitor or manage them – which add up quickly. Scrivito brings you many features other companies have as extras, but we include them all – making Scrivito the most cost-effective solution.

+ It eliminates server management and maintenance

As you won’t be running hosting or servers, you’ll no longer need to pay administrators to manage and maintain servers. Owning, leasing or co-locating servers also includes many challenges down the line, when you want to upgrade or move them. With Scrivito, you remove all of these thoughts while benefiting from the latest technology.

+ It’s a more secure environment

Many current solutions have multiple points of target for hackers and need constant updating and scanning, making you vulnerable. A serverless environment means the only thing you need to focus on is your application or website code. We work with AWS and Netlify to ensure we’re always adopting the very best in security practices for our environments and you can rest assured we’re here for you, if you have any challenges.

+ It frees up internal resources to focus on executing projects which deliver business value

Lift the barriers for innovation in your organization. You will never need to scope out the hosting requirements again with Scrivito or predict how successful you’ll be. You can just code and publish, leaving you to focus on executing projects which deliver real business value.

Websites and applications developed with the Scrivito CMS are built with JavaScript and ReactJS and powered by AWS and Netlify, creating a flexible platform which makes it easy to get your projects live. Of course, many servers are part of the infrastructure we use – but our customers never need to think about them.

If you want to take advantage of what serverless technology has to offer, you can experience all of the benefits by using Scrivito to power your website.
